After having to delve into the underhanded PR methods that were used to develop and support the temporary Police State that was invoked during Toronto’s G20 Summit, it’s still rather difficult to remind ourselves of the beneficial roles that PR plays in forming and supporting Public Opinion. Rather than rehashing the litany of horrifying physical abuses and civil rights violations from last weekend though, let’s attempt to remind ourselves the role that PR can play in creating an orderly and peaceful society.
Here’s a great little piece of German PR that really helps put a proper perspective on how so many many more people could manage to peacefully use public roadways everyday… if they weren’t taking up so much more space with single-occupancy cars.
In case we’ve forgotten…Here’s what a clear and beneficial PR Message looks like:
The picture below is of a staged street level public event, and offers visual display of common sense, and social order from the Press Office of the City of Münster, Germany (circa 2001)Germany and it speaks a thousand words.
This is actually an old poster, that shows the amount of space required to transport the same number of people by Car, Bus, or Bike. The rest is self-explanatory, and reminds us that good sense should come naturally…
Here’s a more detailed a pictorial account of activities at this intersection (above), leading up to a 4 hour period of forced detention for innocent citizens during an ensuing rainstorm.
These are the kinds of clear messages we should be sending each other.
Not the self-righteous rants of Union memberships, selfish demands of Special Interests Groups, protesting poseurs, naive Communists, or the tired and hackneyed old chants of the same old impotent mass-movements that continue to offer the Media images without substance, and protests without any actionable messages. How hard can it be to prepare a message that means something to the Public, and then arrange for the Press/Media to cover it in a way that let’s such a clear messages spread and proliferate through Society where it might make a difference?
